FORMULATION
Each capsule contains 500mg of Azithromycin
INDICATION
Lower respiratory tract infections
Upper respiratory tract infections
Skin/skin structure infections furunculosis, pyoderma and impetigo due to Stapylococcus aureus, S. pyogenes or S. agalactiae
Sexually transmitted disease due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Doses should be given at least an hour before, or 2 hours after meals. The usual dose for uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis is the equivalent of 1g of azithromycin as a single dose. For other infections due to susceptible organisms including otitis media, respiratory-tract infections, and skin infections the dose is 500mg as a single dose daily for 3 days. Alternatively, an initial dose of 500mg may be followed by 250mg daily for a further 4 days. Or as prescribed by a physician.
CONTRAINDICATION
History of hypersensitivity reaction to any of the macrolides.
PRECAUTION
Should not be used with in patients with existing liver disease or hepatic impairment.
Should be given with caution when administering to a nursing woman. It is not known whether azithromycin is excreted in milk.
There are no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
ADVERSE REACTION
Most side effects are mild to moderate in severity and are reversible upon discontinuation of the drug.
Gastro-intestinal disturbances are the most frequent adverse effect but are usually mild and less frequent than with erythromycin.
Transient elevations of liver enzyme values
Transient alterations in neutrophil counts
Rashes, headache, and dizziness
